FEBRUARY 2003

Logos Bookstore's Recommendations
by H. Harris Healy III, President Logos Bookstore

Although it is now midwinter and the weather has been frequently inclement, yet here at Logos Bookstore, it is not a time to hibernate. On Monday, February 10 at 7 P.M., Joni Overton-Jung will be leading a Spirituality & Healing Workshop through a study of Mary Baker Eddy’s Science And Health with Key to the Scriptures. Recently Overton-Jung gave the keynote address, “ Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Of Controversy & Achievement” at “The Price of Being a Pioneer” program at the opening of “This is woman’s hour…” The Life of Mary Baker Eddy exhibit at Pace University on January 28, 2003. In this presentation, Overton-Jung clearly showed Mary Baker Eddy’s importance in the development of women as leaders in the late 19th and early 20th century, on the same level as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Meanwhile the study and discussion of Augustine’s City Of God continues every Wednesday night at 7 P.M., except the first Wednesday of every month. The edition being used for this discussion group is the Doubleday/Image edition, which is most useful in being very readable, and focusing the reader on the principal ideas Augustine wants to convey. A most informative book about Augustine is Garry Wills’ Saint Augustine in the Penguin Lives series. In concise language, Wills delineates Augustine’s life and how that influences his writings, while also presenting the reader with an understanding of who the other religious and political leaders were and what were the different theological, philosophical and political conflicts were of the time.

Kill Your TV Reading Group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7 P.M. and will be discussing Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, and The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen on Wednesday, March 5, 2003. The Children’s Story Hour continues every Monday at 3:30 P.M..

All books in the store are 10% off and Logos has wonderful Valentine’s Day cards and gift items. Come on in!
