Cats, dogs and rabbits baking cakes, making pancakes, marching in parades, fishing, learning how to spell, practicing the banjo, sewing flowers on hats are among many other activities captured in wonderful black and white photographs in the B. Shackman Company’s versions of the antique original children’s bedtime stories: Four Little Kittens, Four Little Puppies and Toodles and Her Friends. The names of the kittens and puppies are quite colorful: Fuzz, Suzz, Buzz, Agamemnon, Toodles, Wags, Rags, Tags and Obadiah. These three books are enjoyable for adult and child alike.

B. Shackman also publishes a full color replica die-cut of the antique original, The Story Of The Three Bears. Goldilocks and the bears come to life in this version. This edition also serves well as a standing table or mantelpiece decoration.

For open, free flowing discussions of a variety of books, there is Kill Your TV Reading Group (KYTV), which meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Logos Bookstore.

A recent highlight for the group was reading Time and Again by Jack Finney. This marvelous novel of going back in time to 19th century New York is full of descriptions of the then newly built Dakota, Gramercy Park and Wall Street. The book is illustrated with black and white photographs of the time and the story is memorable.

Transit: #4, #5 or #6 Lexington Avenue Subway to 86th St., M15 Bus (First & Second Aves.), M86 Bus (86th St.), M79 Bus (79th St.), M31 Bus (York Ave.)
