New Series at WNET Makes Math Fun

Thirteen/WNET New York has appointed Macenje “Che Che” Mazoka as the national outreach project director for Cyberchase, the station’s new animated series and multi-media project designed to engage children, ages 8-11, in the fun and challenges of math. Thirteen, a major producer of programming for PBS, expects the series to premiere on public television stations across the country early in 2002. The outreach will include a web component and a variety of educational print materials.

“There’s a real need to be proactive in ensuring that young people in the United States have the knowledge and skills to meet the international standards of math and ultimately find success in any number of career choices,” Mazoka said. “Cyberchase is a major step in that direction. The series, combined with the educational outreach activities, make math fun, accessible and interesting,, particularly to girls and minority youth in afterschool and community-based programs.”

Mazoka is a longtime media professional who has worked in almost every facet of television, from writing to production, and from serving as on-air talent to working behind-the-scenes on educational projects. She serves as director of youth outreach at Thirteen. #
