Boxing Day in England
by Mr. Rodney Croft
The day after Christmas in the United Kingdom is known
as "Boxing Day". Many of our present Christmas traditions
date from Victorian times. In those days people in service
had to work on Christmas day but were given the next day off
to visit their families and loved ones. As they left the stately
homes on December 26th, it became a tradition to give each
servant a box containing a gift. Hence Boxing Day.
