In 1924, Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected Governor of Wyoming,
the first woman to be elected Governor of a State. She succeeded
her husband, William B. Ross, who died in office.
Background: Wyoming is known as the “Equality State.”
The Territory of Wyoming was established in 1868,
and on December 10, 1869, it became the first Territory or State
to grant women the right to vote, serve on juries and hold public
office. Wyoming was admitted to the Union as the 44th
State on July 10, 1890. It ranks ninth in area (97,818 sq. mi.)
but least in population (over 470,000).
