by H. Harris Healy, III, President
    1575 York Avenue (between 83rd and 84th St.) New York, NY 10028 (212) 517-7292.

It is now October, the season for Halloween, the time for ghosts, goblins and spooky fun for the child in all of us.

For the children, Snappy Little Halloween written by Dugald Steer and illustrated by Derek Matthews, features wonderful popups of witches, cats, skeletons, bats, ghosts, vampires, mummies and jack o'lanterns. Ghoul School by Corina Fletcher, illustrated by David Roberts, is another popup book about a school where timid souls are turned into scary ghouls. The popup scenes show what goes on within school walls and reveal all sorts of creatures.

The Halloween Book by Jane Bull presents 50 creepy crafts for hair-raising fun. Through text and very visual delightful pictures, the author shows the reader how to make jack o'lanterns, flickering flashlights, costumes, fearsome faces, savory bites of food, sweet treats, treat baskets and many more.

For older children, ten new stories have appeared in a collection, written by R.L. Stine with his own introductions, called Nightmare Hour: Time for Terror. The book's cover is a little nightmare itself, with holographic eyes superimposed on a black and white monster. Adults will find out all they want to know about devils, demons, devil's disciples, ghosts, poltergeists, magic and witchcraft, and vampires, in Leonard R.N. Ashley's series of books on these topics: The Complete Book of Devils and Demons; The Complete Book of the Devil's Disciples; The Complete Book of Ghosts and Poltergeists; The Complete Book of Magic and Witchcraft; and The Complete Book of Vampires. Each book comes with extensive encyclopedic entries as well as illustrations.

The Vampire Gallery by J. Gordon Melton gives a colorful overview of various vampire personalities in films, television, comics and books. The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead also by J. Gordon Melton, provides even more information for avid vampire fans: what countries vampires are in, which writers have written about them, the physical aspects and transformations of vampires, and much more fascinating information.

    Happy Halloween! #
