The Youth and Education Committee of Community Board 8 held a meeting focused on the frustrating search for an academically rigorous district high school.
Melanie Cissione, co-chair of the Partnership for an Upper East Side High School reported on the project. She hopes an upcoming meeting with Irving Hammer, Manhattan Borough President Virginia Field’s appointee to the Board of Education, will be fruitful. The key issue is finding the approximately 140,000 square feet of space needed for a public high school.
Oliver Koppel, an attorney and former public official, described the fight he led in Riverdale to turn around a troubled middle school, PS 141, in which parents had lost confidence. His advice was to keep the pressure on, get as many allies as possible and think creatively.
The Youth and Education Committee discussed strategies for their own fight and decided that ratcheting up the pressure and being more confrontational might be necessary, as a letter they sent to Schools Chancellor Harold Levy about the issue has gone unanswered. A subcommittee will get in touch with youth committees of other community boards for advice and sharing of ideas. #
Co-chairs of the Community Board 8 Youth and Education Committee are Donna Satow and James Doundoulakis.
