You and members of your professional staff are invited to attend the Sixteenth International Conference on Magnet Schools to be held at the Sheraton Meadowlands just across the Hudson River from the Big Apple on April 28–May 2, 1998. If you find the Sheraton booked, please contact one of the overflow hotels. They are the Novotel, 1 Polito Ave., Lyndhurst, NJ 07071, (201) 896-6666 ($119 per night for single or double), and the Fort Lee Hilton, 2117 Route 4 Eastbound, Fort Lee, NJ 07024, (201) 461-9000 ($125 per night single or double). Continuous free shuttle service will be provided during the conference between the Sheraton and the other hotels.
The outstanding conference program is the product, primarily, of the staff of the East Orange Unique Schools of Choice. For the first time, we have a celebrity from a field other than education to speak to us. Cicely Tyson, the award-winning actress and a person for whom an east Orange magnet school is named, will address a general session. We will also hear from Dr. John Howard, the New Jersey Superintendent of the Year, and Dr. Rudolph (Rudy) F. Crew, Chancellor of the New York City School District, the largest in the nation. He will speak to us in the Laguardia High School of Performing Arts, the “Fame” school of television.
In addition to the visit to the performing arts school, we will have the opportunity to visit award-winning schools in East Orange and in the all- magnet district of Montclair, NJ. Attendees may visit one school in each district. The day of the visit to the “Fame” school, participants will enjoy a comprehensive visit to the United Nations. This unique opportunity comes because Magnet Schools of America is an NGO (nongovernmental organization) member of the United Nations.
Ninety per cent of those attending our annual conference attended the one the year before. If you were in Las Vegas last year, we rather expect you to be in New York. We had 894 in attendance last year; we are hoping for more than 1,000 this year.
Come be a part of the most important educational venture in America.
